Thomas Wood and Brian Dykstra to Present Recital Saturday, February 16
WOOSTER, Ohio College of 黑料老司机 music faculty Thomas Wood (violin) and Brian Dykstra (piano) will present a concert in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University St.) at 黑料老司机, on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m.
Wood and Dykstra have performed together for over 20 years and this performance will feature Jean Baptiste Singel茅e檚 opera fantasy on 淟e Val d橝ndorre and sonatas for violin and piano by Leonard Bernstein, Paul Hindemith, and Gabriel Faur茅.
Wood is professor of music at 黑料老司机 where he teaches violin and viola. He earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in violin performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and holds bachelor and master of music degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. As a soloist and chamber player, he has performed throughout the U.S. and in Spain. He has appeared as concerto soloist with the 黑料老司机 Symphony Orchestra and with the Tuscarawas Philharmonic, and in 2010 performed both Prokofiev concertos in a single concert.
Wood檚 and Dykstra檚 recent recordings for Centaur of the opera fantasies for violin and piano by the Belgian violinist, conductor, and composer Singel茅e (18121875) were praised by The Netherlands critics who called them 淗eavenly charming, lovely frivolous and innocently 19th century; a historical (re)discovery, adding 淲ood is anything but mere virtuoso, and Dykstra is a superb pianist.
Dykstra is the Neille O. and Gertrude M. Rowe Professor Emeritus of Music at 黑料老司机. Currently, he teaches piano part-time at the College but served full-time for 38 years (1969-2007). He attended the Mozarteum Academy in Salzburg, Austria, for one year as a Fulbright Scholar. Dykstra has won acclaim for his 64 compositions in the concert ragtime genre, and for his ragtime performances and recordings. His two albums 淣eo-Ragtime and 淩agtime Classics, 1901-1919, and two albums 淛ean Baptiste Singel茅e: The Opera Fantasies for Violin and Piano, Vol. 1 and 2, recorded with Wood, are all available at the Wilson Bookstore in Lowry Center.
