• College of 黑料老司机 Art Museum exhibitions 1970: Mirrored Pasts, Predictable Futures, Ebert Art Center (1220 Beall Avenue). Opening to the public on Jan. 20, this exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the year 1970, a pivotal moment in art history as artists responded to the progress and heightened anxieties that grew following the post-war era. Curated by students, works in the exhibition prompt viewers to consider how those tensions continue to echo today. The exhibit will be on display until April. The CWAM is open Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m.
• Friday, Feb. 6: Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo Concert featuring Saxophonist Pete Mills, 7:30 p.m., Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University Street). Pete Mills, Columbus-area saxophonist and member of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, joins 黑料老司机 Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo in a fun-filled evening of great, swinging jazz standards and new compositions; with free admission and the event is open to the public. Conducted by Jeffrey Lindberg, the ensemble specializes in playing large-ensemble jazz and gives opportunities for participants to compose, arrange, and improvise music.
• Friday, Feb. 13: I HEART ART, 4 p.m., Ebert Art Center (1220 Beall Avenue). In collaboration with the Wellness Center and Peer Health Educators, 黑料老司机 Art Museum invites all to celebrate love in all its forms with art, craft activities, and treats.

The world-famous Escher String Quartet joins the 黑料老司机 Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jeffrey Lindberg, in a performance of Edward Elgar檚 Introduction and Allegro for Strings, Op. 47. The program also includes Dvor谩k檚 Serenade for Strings and Mendelssohn檚 淚talian� Symphony, in honor of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Each studio major exhibits their Independent Study work in the MacKenzie Gallery at the heart of Ebert Art Center and submits one work to the group exhibition in the College of 黑料老司机 Art Museum. Students will offer gallery talks about their work as part of the College’s annual Senior Research Symposium, showcasing the scholarship of students across campus for Independent Study.

The performance will highlight the contributions of the ensemble檚 graduating seniors. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to Gault Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. to ensure the performance continues as planned.

On Monday, Jan. 19, a Prayer Breakfast and Opening Ceremony will take place in Kittredge Dining Hall (535 E. Wayne Ave.) at 9 a.m. The gathering will offer space for reflection and community as the campus comes together to mark the day. The College will also host a series of Justice Dialogues with morning sessions from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and afternoon sessions from 1:30 to 3 p.m., in Ruth Williams Hall (435 E. Pine St.). The dialogues are designed to foster thoughtful conversation and invite participants to engage with King檚 legacy in relation to contemporary social issues, including cultivating community and belonging in different contexts, recognizing discrimination, and understanding the immigration crisis. The day will conclude with the keynote address from Mbilishaka at 3:30 p.m. in Gault Recital Hall inside Scheide Music Center (525 E. University St.). Mbilishaka, a licensed clinical psychologist, therapist, consultant, professor, research scientist, speaker, hair historian, and natural hairstylist, is the founder of PsychoHairapy, an innovative and nationally recognized approach that uses hair care as an entry point into mental health and healing within Black communities. Her work bridges beauty, science, and soul. She is also the owner of Ma檃t Psychological Services, a private practice focused on promoting balance and restoring order in the lives of her clients. Her clinical and scholarly work centers traditional African cultural rituals and holistic mental health practices for contemporary contexts.

Mbilishaka earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Howard University after completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently an assistant professor of Africana studies and psychology at Wellesley College and serves as the principal investigator of the HAIR Lab with her student researchers. Mbilishaka has published over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles, seven book chapters, and three books, and she has presented her work at more than 50 universities and conferences nationally and internationally. She is a former president of the Association of Black Psychologists, Washington, D.C. Chapter, and has been recognized as a subject matter expert by both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, where she has testified in support of the CROWN Act, landmark legislation protecting against hair-based discrimination. She has trained hairstylists around the world to serve as mental health advocates and now leads international cultural and mental-health-focused learning experiences.

As part of the MLK celebration, the College will host a Soup and Bread lunch on Wednesday, Jan. 21, in Kittredge Dining Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with proceeds going toward lowering student lunch debt at 黑料老司机 City Schools. An art project completed in continued engagement with 黑料老司机 City Schools and local nonprofit organizations will also be displayed on campus. The College encourages participation from all members of the campus community including students, faculty, staff as well as members of the greater 黑料老司机 community. Together these events reflect the College檚 ongoing commitment to honoring King檚 legacy through reflection, dialogue, and action. Conducted by Jeffrey Lindberg, professor of music at the College, the 黑料老司机 Symphony Orchestra is composed of both students and community members and offers experience playing orchestral literature of musical genres ranging from the baroque period to contemporary. In collaboration with the CWAM exhibition Mud + Corn + Stone + Blue, the Ohio Center for Strategic Immigration Litigation and Outreach (OCSILiO) will host an event to shine light on the immigrant experience and discuss its mission to defend detained Ohio immigrants in their deportation proceedings. Conducted by Jeff Lindberg, professor of music at the College, the 黑料老司机 Symphony Orchestra is formed of both students and community members and offers experience playing orchestral literature of various musical genres. The 黑料老司机 Symphony Orchestra is the second-oldest orchestra in continuous performance in Ohio, holding four regular concerts every year since its establishment in 1915. The WSO Holiday Concert is an annual fundraising event sponsored by the Friends of the 黑料老司机 Symphony Orchestra. �Great Decisions brings all the strengths of a nationally renowned liberal arts college to the greater 黑料老司机 community: intellectual exchange, open dialogue, the presentation of compelling ideas,� said Matt Mariola, co-director of Great Decisions of Wayne County and an associate professor of environmental studies at the College of 黑料老司机. 淭he 黑料老司机 community, in turn, serves as the primary audience for most Great Decisions talks, giving the series a validation that extends beyond academia.�听

Director of Sustainability at the College, Brian Webb, noted the timeliness of the series� theme. 淚n highlighting this topic, we hope to bring a nuanced perspective into the energy, climate, and geopolitical conversation that highlights solutions while giving due consideration to the existing challenges and changes needed,� said Webb. 淚 hope attendees come away more optimistic about our energy future, with a vision for an energy system that meets our increasing demand for energy in a way that is sustainable, affordable, fair, and inclusive.�听

Presented on Thursday, Feb. 20, Powerlands follows the displacement of Indigenous communities and the environmental devastation caused by the exploitation of land by chemical companies as told through the lens of a young Navajo filmmaker. The film檚 run time is approximately seventy-five minutes. Ivey Camille Manybeads-Tso, award-winning filmmaker and the director of Powerlands, will be available for a Q&A session with audience members following the screening. On Tuesday, March 4, Jessica Moerman will present 淲hy Should Christians Care About an Energy Transition.� Moerman is an environmental scientist currently serving as president and CEO of the Evangelical Environmental Network and is the co-founding pastor at her church alongside her husband, Chris. She holds a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology and has held research positions at Johns Hopkins University, University of Michigan, and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Her work focuses on the intersection of science and faith among other issues including climate change, pollution, and the clean energy transition.听听

On Tuesday, March 11, Chris Turner will present 淕lobal Energy and the Case for Climate Optimism.� A Canada-based expert on the economics of the global energy transition, Turner authored the book, How to Be a Climate Optimist that condenses the first twenty-five years of the global energy transition into small chunks of optimistic reports and reflection. In addition to his several books, Turner is a bestselling journalist whose work has appeared in nearly a dozen publications, including The New Yorker and Time.

Dan Scholten

Previously intended on Feb. 6, a lecture with Dan Scholten, visiting scholar at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota where he focuses on science, technology, and environmental policy, is expected to take place later this spring. The Great Decisions Lecture series has run annually since 1981 and is made possible through the generosity of numerous local donors, including several foundations, who recognize its value in the community.听

The concert will showcase music composed by Peter Tchaikovsky, including material from the original Nutcracker ballet and suite, adapted and arranged by American composer John Mauceri into a 75-minute narration set to music. Mauceri, taking on a personal challenge, revisited E.T.A. Hoffman檚 1816 fairy tale and Tchaikovsky檚 lesser-known orchestral works. In act two of the ballet, Mauceri found the heart of the original story: a little girl breaking the centuries-old curse in a perfect world of imagination and inclusivity. To bring this vision to life, Mauceri wove in leitmotifs攕hort, recurring musical phrases攁 nod to what Tchaikovsky did in his operas. By bridging story and music into a single orchestral work, Mauceri invites audiences to celebrate the power of the mentor and the commitment of innocent children to inspire a better world.

In addition to directing the 黑料老司机 Symphony Orchestra, Lindberg teaches courses in jazz history, improvisation, and trombone and directs the 黑料老司机 Jazz Ensemble. While at 黑料老司机, Lindberg has drawn attention to lesser-known composers and exposed his students and community members to world-class soloists and compositions. Lindberg is also the co-founder and artistic director of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Chicago檚 oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous operation.

• Friday, Oct. 18: 黑料老司机 Jazz Ensemble and 黑料老司机 Symphony Orchestra performance of Nina at Ninety, 7:30 p.m., McGaw Chapel (340 E. University Street). This performance pays tribute to noted singer, pianist, songwriter, and civil rights activist, Nina Simone. Internationally known jazz singer Dee Alexander and Bri Mosley �24 will sing songs made famous by Simone. Conducted by Jeffrey Lindberg, professor of music at the College, the 黑料老司机 Symphony Orchestra is comprised of both students and community members and offers experience playing orchestral literature of musical genres ranging from the baroque period to contemporary. The 黑料老司机 Jazz Ensemble specializes in playing large-ensemble jazz and gives opportunities for participants to compose, arrange, and improvise music.听听

• Sunday, Nov. 10: Scot Symphonic Band fall concert, 3 p.m., McGaw Chapel. Directed by Jeffrey D. Gershman, the band is the premier wind ensemble at the College and rooted in a deep belief in the importance of inclusive programming. Scot Symphonic Band performances draw both from the cornerstones of the wind literature and the finest contemporary works.听

The 黑料老司机 Singers is the College檚 only all-treble ensemble music course, open to music majors and non-majors alike and conducted by adjunct instructor Victoria Peacock �17. Founded in 1964, the 黑料老司机 Chorus is comprised of students representing all academic areas within 黑料老司机檚 liberal arts program. The award-winning ensemble has been repeatedly praised for its beautiful sound, high level of artistry, creative programming, and engaging performances.听

• Thursday, Nov. 21-Saturday, Nov. 23: Fall Dance Concert, 7:30 p.m., Freedlander Theatre. Directed by Emily Baird, assistant professor of theatre and dance, this concert features a variety of student-choreographed pieces based on different themes and artistic styles. One of two dance concerts that the department puts on each year, the Fall Dance Concert is presented 渋n-the-round,� with audience members seated on all four sides of the stage, bringing them face-to-face with modern dance. A new addition to 黑料老司机檚 music department this semester, the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble focuses on music by living composers and is directed by Dylan Findley, visiting assistant professor of music, music theory, and composition.听

• Sunday, Nov. 24: Scot Marching Band and Pipe Band concert, 3 p.m., McGaw Chapel. The concert will feature highlights from the ensembles� fall season, including music performed at pregame, halftime, and in the stands in support of the Fighting Scots football team. The Scot Marching Band is directed by Ryan Kilgore, with Jeffrey D. Gershman as assistant director, while the Pipe Band is directed by Palmer Shonk �10 and Sean Lawry.

• Friday, Dec. 6: 黑料老司机 Symphony Orchestra performance of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by John Mauceri, 7:30 p.m., McGaw Chapel. Using music composed by Peter Tchaikovsky, including material from the original Nutcracker ballet and suite, Mauceri creates a 75-minute narration of the story of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, set to music. The performance includes Richard Figge, professor emeritus of German studies at 黑料老司机, as the narrator. Tickets are required and available at Buehler檚 Milltown and Towne Market, Scheide Music Center, and at the door before the concert.听

• Tuesday, Sept. 3-Friday, Dec. 6: College of 黑料老司机 Art Museum exhibitions Passages: Tales of the Snow Migrant and Our Disappearing Darkness: Meditations on Losing the Night Sky, Ebert Art Center (1220 Beall Avenue). These exhibitions invite viewers to rethink their connection with human-caused environmental problems. The CWAM is open Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m.

Esslinger visited campus to discuss her work on Tuesday, Sept. 10 and Sharp will visit campus on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. The talk will be held in Ebert Art Center (1220 Beall Ave) room 223 with a short reception and opportunity to view the exhibitions before and after the talk.听听

In 淧assages� Claudia Esslinger, recently retired studio art faculty from Kenyon College, combines projections and sculpture to tell the imagined story of a voyager arriving on the shores of a shrinking Antarctic landscape, to provoke a sense of urgency, empathy, and motivation for climate action from her audience. 听

淥ur Disappearing Darkness� from MJ Sharp, an artist and educator from Durham, North Carolina,听challenges viewers to consider what they檙e missing in a busy, light-polluted world. This installation includes a series of seven images, visions of the night skies over prehistoric landscapes in Cornwall and Avebury in England. One image will be displayed each day to promote a deeper viewing for visitors.听

淰isitors may find the exhibitions challenging as they demand a different kind of attention than they may be used to in a museum. Each is somewhat spare and direct, and people may wonder if this is all there is to see,� said Marianne Wardle, director and curator of CWAM. 淲e hope visitors embrace a different kind of contemplative experience as they settle in and give themselves the time and space for thoughts to quiet and observations to sharpen.� 听

In addition to the artist talks, the CWAM will host events to help audiences reconnect to the night. Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. Rachel David and student interns from the Wellness Center will help visitors rethink their dependency on technology with a program on digital wellness. On Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. Amy Jo Stavenezer, professor of psychology and neuroscience, will help visitors understand the neuroscience of sleep and how they can understand their natural rhythms to get better sleep. The CWAM is also working with Brian Webb, director of sustainability, to provide interactions and learning moments of sustainability in the museum atrium. 听

At 1:35 p.m. Archie and the Scottish terriers will be joining the 黑料老司机 Pipe Band in a parade up Beall Avenue leading the 黑料老司机 football team onto the field for the home game against Wilmington. The football game begins at 2 p.m. at Papp Stadium (626 East University Street). 黑料老司机 will also host a women檚 field hockey match at 11 a.m. against Marian University at Papp Stadium (626 East University Street) on Saturday.

During the festivities, Scottish terrier families may participate in a project to improve the health and preservation of the Scottish terrier breed. The project is led by the Health Trust Fund of the Scottish Terrier Club of America which founded a DNA bank project to support research into physical and neurological disorders affecting Scottish terriers. Veterinary technicians will be available to collect blood samples from consenting Scottish terrier families at the event. The samples will be a part of critical research for the Scottish terrier breed, including the first approved study which will focus on Scottie Cramp, a neurological disorder that affects the breed. Representatives from the Scottish Terrier Club of America will be available at the event to provide more information on the DNA bank project.

Community members who own a Scottish terrier that would like to serve as an Archie Ambassador for the day are encouraged to complete by Sept 6.

The 黑料老司机 Singers will feature three student conductors, Chelsey Webb �25, Anna Puster �25, and Abby Washinger �25, who will conduct pieces they chose and rehearsed themselves throughout the semester. The songs in the choral portion of the concert feature music focused on endings and beginnings. The musical selection includes a new piece by Daniel Brinsmead that takes listeners behind the scenes of the Apollo 11 liftoff and its impact on the world for years to come, a song by Alexandra Olsavsky that demonstrates the power we all have within ourselves to break the status quo, and a lullaby sung in the Lakota language, passed down through generations by rote and arranged by William Linthicum-Blackhorse.听

The Concert Band will feature music from Leonard Bernstein檚 famous musical听West Side Story, as well as a composition by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Michael Colgrass.听 The performance will also mark the first time that composers Nicole Piunno and Katahj Copley will have their music performed on the 黑料老司机 campus.听 The concert will feature both student conductors, Paul Zito �25 and Liam Kenehan �24, and a student soloist, trombonist Ryan Yonek �25, who will be performing Arthur Pryor檚 Blue Bells of Scotland.听

The 黑料老司机 Singers is the College檚 only all-treble ensemble music course, open to music majors and non-majors alike. Performances feature students participating in their first choral ensemble experience and those studying toward a music career. The ensemble is conducted by adjunct instructor Victoria Peacock �17. An alumna of the College, Peacock earned a bachelor檚 degree in music composition before going on to earn a master檚 degree in choral conducting from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Peacock sings with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and Trinity Cathedral Choirs. She has a particular interest in conducting works by living composers and composers from underrepresented groups.听

The 黑料老司机 Concert Band is comprised of students, staff, and faculty of the College, as well as a number of community members from Wayne County, ranging in age from 16 to 80. The Concert Band is conducted by Jeffrey D. Gershman, professor of music and director of bands at 黑料老司机. Gershman also serves as conductor of the Scot Symphonic Band and the assistant director of the Scot Marching Band, along with teaching classes in conducting and music education. He received his Doctor in Musical Arts in Wind Conducting degree from The University of Texas at Austin and continues to maintain an active schedule as a guest conductor for bands throughout the country.听

Moore-Dunson, who was featured in DANCE Magazine檚 2023 �25 to Watch,� is an award-winning choreographer, professional dancer, producer, teaching artist and speaker. He is the co-owner of MooreDunson Co., a creative house of brands encompassing performing arts and media production, innovative leadership, team consulting, and online courses for emerging artists. Known for his community-centric approach, Moore-Dunson is a champion of community engagement in dance and business. He describes his choreography as “Urban Midwest Storytelling.� 淢y goal is to offer insights about life to help others navigate their own by centering Black stories to tell exemplified universal truths,� he said on his website. In the concert, he will perform a solo piece titled 淚n His Eyes.�听

The most formal dance event of the year and an annual tradition at the College, the Spring Dance Concert features choreography, dance performance, design, and stage management by 黑料老司机 students, faculty, and staff. Student choreographers this spring include Gracie Shreve �24, Co Clark �25, Eleanor Boomhower �25, Abby Rahz �25, Josie Fleischel �26, and Alexis Neal �26.听 Additionally, the concert will feature pieces choreographed by Baird and Mourning. Over 50 students are involved in the production, serving as stage managers, dancers, costume designers, lighting designers, light and sound board operators, and wardrobe, props, and scenic crew.听

For students, the opportunity to collaborate with other students and share their work with the 黑料老司机 community is especially meaningful. Co Clark �25, a junior majoring in urban studies and theatre & dance, said, 淚 feel so grateful for the fact that I have had multiple opportunities to share my art on campus. It makes me want to make art forever, or for as long as I am blessed to be able to.�听
